The H2Joe will be the dehydrated coffee addicts new favorite item

The H2Joe will be the dehydrated coffee addicts new favorite itemThe H2Joe will be the dehydrated coffee addicts new favorite itemI genuinely believe everyone has one good invention in them. Unfortunately, most of us rarely get the chance to share our earth-shattering practical additions to society with the public. For example, I accidentally invented skittles gum back in fourth grade a whole year before the product officially hit shelves in 2006.I hope fellow prodigies, Brett Moddy and John Anthony wont be made to share in my misfortune of timing. The two are the Chicago based inventors behind the H2Joe. A reusable, water, coffee container hybrid.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe leak-proof, polypropylene dream device is expected to crash land on the world in October of this year. Moody and Anthony have a tretanlasser going to ensure their goal. The team behind the aspiring ga me-changer were inspired by their own daily frustrations when they first conceived the H2joe.Moody states For years, weve complained about having to fill two bottles each morning - one for coffee and one for water. Dorothy disliked having to juggle two bottles as she made her way out the door. I often forgot my water bottle altogether but had no problem refilling my coffee mug all day long. By the time I got home, Id be caffeinated, dehydrated, and feeling guilty that I didnt make the time to drink water. No one in the corporate world can be deaf to these sympathies. Considering 80% of Americans say they dont drink enough water a day, a convenient incentive to carry it around easier is pretty nifty.Little hacks that better equip us to meet daily nutritional requirements while making us more energized and productive cant be overlooked.Lugging a big cumbersome water bottle around is unwieldy enough on its own. But a bottle that can also safely bear our favorite morning jolt juice, whi le keeping it hot (for up to eight hours) is a fair compromise. A compromise that additionally see us drink more water throughout the day.Anything to needle the malaise that preys upon satisfying-productive days. CAD Not Just for Engineers

CAD Not Just for Engineers CAD Not Just for Engineers The CAD programs that engineers use every day for highly technical design and implementation of engineering concepts have otzu sich, far flung uses. Fashion designers, video game creators, landscapers, and interior designers have used the programs to make their work mora efficient, and more transparent to their clients.Kathy Dickinson, for instance, has knit, sewn, and crocheted clothes for dolls since she was a child. As an adult she started a small home-based business selling vintage patterns. Her business, Haleas Doll Clothes grew steadily from her home in Averill Park, New York, helped along by the rise of the internet, which gave doll lovers the world over a new means to find each other. Unfortunately, though, a series of seizures left her with trembling hands.Kathy Dickinson turned to CAD to streamline doll clothes and doll pattern making. She sells patterns over the Internet.I used to be a really good artist, but now I cant hold a pencil without a problem, Dickinson said. She found a CAD program that that she thought could help her produce her miniaturized dresses. I can draw basic things, though on the shaky side, import them into TurboCAD, and hold a mouse to clean them up, she said.To create her designs, she first draws a preliminary pattern with pencil, then cuts it from paper and drapes it on her intended doll. If it drapes correctly, she imports the design to create the first simple pattern. She can then adjust for the amount of material that will accommodate the seam, called a seam allowance. If youre good, it should only take you a couple of tries, she said. One Maine jeweler uses TurboCAD software when designing custom jewelry. He creates a 2-D model to specify dimensions and a 3-D one to show clients how the piece will look.Alfred Kypta, of Lewiston, Maine, had a head start on Dickinsonhe worked with CAD for years as an electrical engineer. So it was only natural for him to turn to CAD for his other passion designing and making jewelry.Kypta has since started a retail jewelry business, where he continues to design and produce custom pieces, like rings or brooches, mainly from gold, silver, or platinum. He first draws the pieceas he envisions itin two dimensions in the software system to specify exact dimensions. He then creates a three-dimensional model from the 2-D drawing. The 2-D is for when I actually build the piece. Its like building a house, he said. You have the 2-D blueprint and you construct the house from those drawings.Kypta uses the 3-D model as a preview for potential customers. Its amazing how, when people see what theyll be getting, its so much easier to sell the piece, Kypta said.CAD, of course, is an essential tool for architectsnot only for straight office buildings, but for quirkier projects as well.Take the aquarium project undertaken by the design firm Chermayeff, Sollogub, and Poole (CSP). The firm used Architectural Desktop software from AutoDesk, as well as the AutoCAD program more familiar to mechanical engineers, to design a 60,000-square-foot expansion to the National Aquarium of Baltimore. The expansion will include a habitat for crocodiles, fish, and birds indigenous to Australia, as well as space for retail stores and a restaurant. To design the Iowa Rainforest Project, the 600-foot-long greenhouse-style building in Coralville, Iowa, the firm used an Autodesk offering called Autodesk VIZ, which allowed them to visualize how the final project would look. A project of that size requires an image of equal impact, said Tom Jin, Associate with CSP. Visualization was previously a four-step process. Designers and graphic designers constructed wire frames, then traced, scanned, and rendered them. Now, a single designer can generate stunning views. All kinds of people, both within and outside of the engineering industry will continue to come up with new uses for CAD. The next time you call up your computerized part assembly, ther e very well may be some chic fashion designer simultaneously firing up the same program for a wildly different purpose.Adapted from Soup to Nuts, by Jean Thilmany, Associate Editor, Mechanical Engineering, January 2005.Designers and graphic designers constructed wire frames, then traced, scanned, and rendered them. Now, a single designer can generate stunning views.Tom Jin, Associate, CSP

15 office clothing choices you should never make in the summer

15 sekretariat clothing choices you should never make in the summer15 office clothing choices you should never make in the summerEven though we live in an increasingly casual world where joga clothes or post-yoga class or you-walked-by-a-yoga-studio-and-thought-about-it-but-got-frozen-yogurt-instead-clothes are the norm for everyday wear, there are mucksmuschenmucksmuschenstill a few lines you cannot cross in offices. Now, yes, many office environments like startups have literally what binnenseems like zero rules when it comes to attire and in the summer, boundaries are especially pushed because of the higher temperatures which some people view as an excuse to wear ANYTHING.However, there are a couple of cardinal rules you should always follow in a workplace setting. After all, you never know when an unexpected and important guest, like the CEO, or big meeting is going to pop up and you look like an extra in a Miley Cyrus video.Plus, a recent survey OfficeTeamfound that86% of workers and 80% of managers feel clothing choices affect a persons chances of being promoted. So consider the following guidelines. For women1. Short shortsEspecially of the denim variety.Stick to a smarter denim pick if your workplace allows jeans, and save the frayed short shorts for the weekends, said former Teen Vogue editor Mary Kate Steinmiller toWho What Wear. And even if they arent denim and cost a lot of money, some workplaces still have no shorts rules (even if they are as long as some of the skirts you wear) so definitely check before you bust them out.2. Tube topsFirst of all no matter what, you end up spending half your day pulling your tube top up so it is super distracting for you and everyone around you. Strapless is always just a bit tricky in an office setting. If youre desperate to show off your shoulders op for a cold shoulder top like this one. Halter tips fit under this umbrella as well.3. Crop topsYes, they are all the rage and congrats on having a midriff area you are comfortable sharing with the general public, but Dan in accounting doesnt need to see your naval. In my opinion, the biggest fashion faux-pas would be wearing crop tops at work. Keep these pieces for going out with friends in the evening or on weekends PR Coordinator Simone Kuhfal forFORWARD by Elyse Walker said to Who What Wear.4. LeggingsThere will probably be some arguments on this and even though most brands tout Leggings Theyre almost like pants, they arent. Unless you are a workout instructor, save these for yoga class or the walk by yoga class to fro-yo.5. RompersNow after some research it seems that a formal jumpsuit is OK for some offices and maybe if you work in fashion overalls are acceptable, but even women who work in fashion say rompers are a no-no. First of all, you have to get naked when you go to the bathroom which just feels wrong in the workplace. Second, they confuse people so you may become the center of attention in a bad way and thirdly, they somehow come acro ss as more casual than shorts. If you work in a fairly casual office but still arent sure about certain items, see if your boss or someone higher up is wearing them (definitely not the intern) and then assume you can wear them. For men1.Tank topsNice guns but just no.2. Shiny ShirtsIts work, not a nightclub.3. Deep v-necksJust like women have to be careful with how much cleavage they show off at work, men also need to be aware of theirdcolletage.4. A suit jacket with shortsEven LeBron James couldnt pull this off. Suits need pants.5. Sandals with socksIf youre too cold to wear sandals then just wear regular shoes with socks. You cant have bothFor everyone1. Flip flopsYes, these have become a staple of society in the summer and people do wear them for fine dining, but they really should be kept out of the office. Plus, walking in them if you live in the city is terrible for your feet and relatively unhygienic.2. Mesh or sheer anythingNothing transparent should be in the office. There are many things I would not wear to the office, even in the casual fashion-friendly environment I work in. The first would be anything sheer. The office is not the place to test the boundaries on the level of coverage your clothing provides you, Lauren Eggersten, Editor for Who What Wear said.3. Anything stained, dirty or wrinkledThis one seems like common sense but you never know. You always want to do your best to look professional and not show the world that you havent had time to do your laundry or ironing.4. Anything you wear to the beachA simple rule of thumb If you would find this at the beach, dont wear it to work.5. A giant floppy hatThis falls under the beach category somewhat but really any kind of large hat is a solid no.

Why smart people never bring smartphones into meetings

Why smart people never bring smartphones into meetings Why smart people never bring smartphones into meetings You are annoying your boss and colleagues any time you take your phone out during meetings, says research from USC’s Marshall School of Business, and if you work with women and people over forty they’re even more perturbed by it than everyone else. The researchers conducted a nationwide survey of 554 full-time working professionals earning above $30K and working in companies with at least 50 employees. They asked a variety of questions about smartphone use during meetings and found: 86% think it’s inappropriate to answer phone calls during meetings 84% think it’s inappropriate to write texts or emails during meetings 66% think it’s inappropriate to write texts or emails even during lunches offsite The more money people make the less they approve of smartphone use. The study also found that Millennials are three times more likely than those over 40 to think that smartphone use during meetings is okay, which is ironic considering Millennials are highly dependent upon the opinions of their older colleagues for career advancement.TalentSmart  has tested the emotional intelligence of more than a million people worldwide and found that Millennials have the lowest self-awareness in the workplace, making them unlikely to see that their smartphone use in meetings is harming their careers. Why do so many people - especially successful people - find smartphone use in meetings to be inappropriate? When you take out your phone it shows a: Lack of respect.  You consider the information on your phone to be more important than the conversation at hand, and you view people outside of the meeting to be more important than those sitting right in front of you. Lack of attention.  You are unable to stay focused on one thing at a time. Lack of listening.  You aren’t practicing  active  listening, so no one around you feels heard. Lack of power.  You are like a modern-day Pavlovian dog who responds to the whims of others through the buzz of your phone. Lack of self-awareness:  You don’t understand how ridiculous your behavior looks to other people. Lack of social awareness:  You don’t understand how your behavior affects those around you. I can’t say I’m surprised by the USC study’s findings. My company  coaches leaders  using  360 °  assessments  that compare their self-perception to how everyone else sees them. Smartphone use in meetings is one of the most common coworker complaints. It’s important to be clear with what you expect of others. If sharing this article with your team doesn’t end smartphone use in meetings, take a page out of the Old West and put a basket by the conference room door with an image of a smart phone and the message, “Leave your guns at the door.”This column first appeared on LinkedIn.

10 Brilliant Hacks Thatll Let You Work Smarter, Not Harder

10 Brilliant Hacks That'll Let You Work Smarter, Not Harder 10 Brilliant Hacks That'll Let You Work Smarter, Not Harder The job search wouldn’t be so daunting if it you didn’t have to spend so many hours, countless late nights, and weeks on end searching for jobs and sending in applications. It’s a long, exhausting process â€" but we’re here to help make it easier for you so that you work smarter, not harder! Looking to streamline your job search? Consider the following job search hacks that every prospective employee should try during the job hunt. If you don’t set a schedule for yourself, you’re never going to get anywhere. Get up early, head to a café or co-working space (just anywhere that’s not your apartment) and work on your job applications as if it was your job to do so. Not only will this prepare you for adjusting to a job schedule later, but the more serious your take your job search, the easier it’s going to be. Don’t waste your time and apply to a company or job that isn’t going to allow you to pay the bills. Want to weed out those jobs? Simply use the Glassdoor Know Your Worth tool to calculate your worth and find jobs that match your salary. If you’re already doing step one, considering changing it up a bit and breaking up your work time into twenty-minute time blocks. This will help you be more productive in the long run because staring at your screen for six hours working on the same material will drive you crazy! Instead, work on a job application for twnty minutes, then go for a walk or move to different location. Then, work on a job application for another twenty minutes. Make a list of the top ten companies you want to work for and read online reviews or articles about these companies. Based on the reviews, make a list of the top five companies you definitely want to work for after reading more about the company. Then, look for jobs at those companies and apply to each one! Take the time to make your resume perfect. Double check for typos and have a friend or resume expert look it over. Once it’s perfect, take 30-seconds and upload it to Glassdoor . Seriously, it’s that easyâ€"and now when you browse the site, you can easily apply to a job. Plan a rest day in the middle of your week during your job search and do something completely different â€" like going for a hike. Something as simple as getting out in nature for a little bit can help relive the stress and anxiety you are likely experiencing during the job hunt. It’s important to not spend an entire week just applying to jobs â€" you always have to take some time for mindfulness, or else you’ll end up tiring yourself out, which, in turn, will lead to lackluster job applications. Once you start to narrow in on some companies you really, really, want to work for, consider looking up employees who work there. You can put a call to action out on your social media pages to see if any friends know someone at the company who could give you an introduction.  Social sites like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn can also help you find connections you may not know you have. If you can get the contact information for an employee who works at the company you want to apply to, that can help you get a foot in the door. Stuck on those cover letters ? Grab a pen and paper and read through the job application closely. Write down all the keywords that stand out or that you see multiple times. This will help you focus your cover letter or resume with the same keywordsâ€"which will help make your application stand out! Did you know that on Glassdoor you can set your account settings to receive alerts when a job you might be interested gets posted, or when a company you are following posts a job? Setting up alerts will help make sure you never miss an opportunity that you might be interested in â€" you never know what could happen! One of the easiest, and quickest ways to make the job search process easier is to put job listings at the front of your mind. By following recruiters, job sites or your favorite companies on all social channels, you’ll see their posts in all of your social news feedsâ€"that way you never miss a listing! Who knows, maybe the next time you are scrolling through Instagram or Twitter, you’ll see a hiring post that you might have missed otherwise!

Questions that Clarify Your Company Brand

Questions that Clarify Your Company Brand Questions that Clarify Your Company Brand Questions that Clarify Your Company Brand Adapted from the book Finding Keepers: The Guide to Hiring and Holding the Worlds Best Employees by Steve Pogorzelski, Jesse Harriott, Ph.D., and Doug Hardy. Published January 2008 by McGraw-Hill. People recognize culture, and it can be a powerful attraction to highly talented candidates. Good employer branding incorporates culture because its one of the intangible benefits that make an impression on the poised candidate. Furthermore, branding only matters if it reaches your target audience so describe your employer brand for the poised worker. Since your job is to articulate the employer brand that already exists, in reality and in aspiration, start with your employees. Solicit candid input from your current workforce because, as weve seen, a large section of them are poised workers. Your current employees are the experts; if you start anywhere other than their experience, you are writing fiction. Ask your employees these questions: Values Questions What do we as an organization believe? How do we choose which projects get done? On what criteria is your performance judged? Are we fair? How do we treat customers? Which customers deserve the most attention? Culture Questions Why are you here? What is unique about us? What is your relationship to the customer? Why would your customer do business with you? What outcomes do you want from your work? How do we achieve our goals? Describe the kind of person who succeeds here. What do we want people who work here to feel for this place? What, other than money, would tempt you to leave? Would you recommend this organization to a close friend? You should also develop a more detailed list of features and benefits of working at your organization. These are the details that HR professionals and recruiters love to discuss, because theyre more concrete than mission and culture: Job description Compensation details (salary, bonuses, hourly rate, profit sharing) Benefits of all kindsmedical, 401(k) and pension plans, savings Business lineyour products and services Business opportunitythe upside of working for you, the chance to advance a career Lifestylework-life balance or intense atmosphere; a jobs travel requirements, etc. Location Positioning in the industry (best products, employer of choice status) Community service and other outward expressions of culture Recognition from the outside You dont advertise with this list because, frankly, these features and benefits play backup in the employer brand. A list is just not as compelling as a statement (or better, a narrative). The features and benefits of a job might help you close a deal with a talented individual, or tip the balance against a competitor, but they arent effective in getting attention. Details help, and its important to accentuate all the positive things that go on in a company. Lori Erickson remembers that when I took this job at there were benefits we offer that I didnt even know about. We have an adoption assistance program and nursing rooms for new mothers in every single facility across the United States. We have a work-life person whose sole job is to put programs in place that make it easier for employees to balance the challenges of having a life and a job.We had to learn to push that message into the recruiting story. Your first attempt to define an employer brand doesnt have to be perfect, but it does have to satisfy a few rules: Is it authentic? Does your statement reflect reality? Do employees recognize the values and the culture you describe? Is it unique? Would an employee know that this describes your organization and not a similar one? Is it compelling? Does it demand action? Does it describe the meaning of working at your organization? Is it relevant? Is your statement meaningful to the people youre trying to attract? Does it describe an experience? As far as candidates, potential candidates, and employees are concerned, your employer brand is an experience. Its not a slogan, and its not a logo, and its not a press release. Its the good or bad deal of investing another day of their one-and-only lives in your organization. The answers to each of these questions must be yes, because otherwise youll miss your audience. Rigorous questioning of the statement worked for Laura Stanley, who leads the Talent Acquisition and Employment Branding team at EarthLink in Atlanta. She started her work with a reality check: When I joined, the first thing I did was to ask my team, Okay, why do people join, and that you articulate pretty clearly what theyre going to get when they come, and also what theyve got to give, too, and to make sure that were attracting the right people in the right jobs at the right time.

Why Social Media Is Important in Any Job Search

Why Social Media Is Important in Any Job Search Why Social Media Is Important in Any Job Search Social media is often thought of as a platform for personal use and not a tool to utilize on a professional level. However, there are several reasons why social media is important in any job search and for career progression. For anyone pondering the importance of social media in a job search, consider the following reasons why social media is important in ANY job search- including yours. Social Recruiting and Screening Is the New Norm Social media is being used on a daily basis to identify, recruit, and verify potential candidates. It’s estimated that over 90 percent of recruiters use social media to screen applicants, mainly through Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. In fact, a majority of hiring managers begin looking at social media channels as soon as they receive an application. With such a presence in the virtual world, thats why social media is important- it can make or break a job search.
