Through all of the discussions with your manager, colleagues and friends, you still find yourself upset, unmotivated and unfulfilled. You may not realize it â€" but you may already passed through he threshold of “gone”. Simply put, you may not be getting enough from your current role to sustain a viable, healthy relationship. Research concerning the psychological contract in the workplace tells us that breaches of the exchange agreement between an employee and employer are common â€" yet mending these breaches can be challenging. In many cases we have already “left the building” and moved on, even if we remain physically present. Here are signs you may have passed this critical point. If you recognize any of these (and have made an effort to affect the situation), I would begin to seriously consider a change: You’ve withdrawn. Likened to depression, you may start cutting yourself off from workplace activities you would normally complete â€" even the tasks you previously have found fulfilling. You may find yourself muttering,”What’s the difference if I respond to this e-mail?” or “Why bother following up with that customer?”. You do not see a future. In some cases, you have already marked the “end of history” with your current job. One client described sitting in a training session and thinking: “Hopefully, I won’t be here to use this.” Enough said. You’ve stopped sharing. We may have become reluctant to share ideas or opinions, as experience has shown they have not been respected or taken seriously. On another note, if you begin to “hoard” your best thoughts for your next employer, that speaks volumes about your frame of mind. You have “divorce” fantasies. Is your exit already rehearsed? Are you envisioning the day you walk out forever? When you spend time with friends, are discussions about your next role central? Ultimately, it may be high time to enrich your role or career, especially if you have already left psychologically. 3 Ways To Stop Reacting and Start Acting In our quest for efficiency, to stay on the ball, to roll with the punches, to keep up with emails, to keep the peace, we react. And it has a negative effect on our lives. Reacting with an unoriginal response to a new job posting can sabotage a career prospect. Unconsciously cleaning the house when there is a problem we do not know how to resolve in our relationship does not solve the problem, it just distracts us from it. Sure, the house is clean and you feel good about completing a task, but the problem is still there, even if you â€" forgive the pun- swept it under the rug. Here are 3 ways to  stop reacting and start acting. On Career Moves: Apply for jobs in person In our current exciting technological era, dropping off your resume in a mailbox seems archaic. Instead, we apply through LinkedIn or email our CVs and Resumes to the contact address on the prospective employer’s website. Outside of punctuation marks (which are usually discouraged in professional correspondence) emotions are missing from our resumes and CVs. Outlook and iMail do not notice that you are a breath of fresh air when you enter the room. Emotional Intelligence allows us to identify our personal and other’s feelings and synthesize this information to guide our behavior. Author, psychologist, and science journalist Daniel Goleman would argue that these non-cognitive skills can matter as much as I.Q. for workplace success. So go ahead, drop off your amazing resume and portfolio samples in person. Ask the receptionist if the hiring manager is there, so that you can flash your confident smile and demonstrate your excellent interpersonal communication skills. Your honors GPA and volunteerism is fabulous, but face to face, Skype, FaceTime are the edge you need to standout in our digital domain. Make Life Easier: Program and Plan Following a program or a plan helps you feel competent and confident and boosts self-esteem. After listening to Ari Meisel’s webinar on the art of less doing, I stepped up my external-brain game. He recommends having constant, universal access to everything you know with the help of resources such as Evernote. While I like Evernote’s camera mode for taking a picture of something to attach to a note or reminder, I still utilize Outlook and iCal to plan my workweek and free time. Ari also notes that errands are a waste of time and inefficient. Find programs or websites that help you gain more efficiency. For example, Ive been using Amazons Subscribe and  Save and two-months into my subscription service, I am hooked! No more running out when you run out of non-perishables. Items such as Ziploc bags, cleaning supplies, water even chocolate (yes, please) can be delivered to your doorstep monthly or at the frequency you select. This frees up precious time for activities that you bring you joy. Take Time to Think: Prioritize your values In RomComs, often the man or the woman does something to mess it up (conflict) and their partner ignores them or confronts them (rising action). Regardless of the reaction, the decision to respond with silence or to challenge the other person is likely uncomfortable. Before you call, before you text, before you cry, before you yell think about what matters to you. Extract your emotions (super hard) and think about your priorities. Discern how you would feel if you acted one way. Then flip it and check out how you would feel if you acted in a different way. Waiting it out may not feel good at first, but after you sit still for a moment (aka mindfulness) you are better able to take cues from yourself instead of your environment. Once resume driven â€" networks and the right kind of exposure have really taken center stage. Ive just had a break-neck, jam-packed conversation with a very engaging family friend about that very topic. He works in Silicon Valley and careers can path evolve very quickly there â€" so I listened closely as he launched into a perfectly inspiring explanation about how he landed his latest role. It was a very interesting chat. We discussed weak links and progressive ambition (more on these below) â€" topics which will likely impact most of our career paths going forward. As he aptly pointed out, Your connections/followers that you engage with at LinkedIn are your weak links. They will likely help you see (and gain) your next opportunity. He is absolutely right. I can see that happening. Social networks have affected my career in a manner that I never dreamed of, as compared to 10 years ago. Your extended network will likely play a much stronger role, as well. In this case, even though this individual is currently one of my weak links â€" as we communicate sporadically â€" we have the ability to support each other. We may never work together directly, however that matters little in the larger scheme. However, there is mutuality in the potential to enhance our paths, broaden our perspective and visualize the future. Here are a few highlights of the conversation: Progressive Ambition. To be frank, we need to stop viewing our career paths as set in stone. We should be open to viewing it as fluid, even a bit murky. Well only see whats next as we move through the steps. As we stand on one steps shoulders, only then will we see what might exist at the horizon. The Power of Weak Links. We havent fully embraced the power of the weaker links or nodes within our social networks â€" and we must try to do so. These weak links can impact both how we work and our career paths. Here is what Gartner said about weak links and work swarms in this classic 2010 post: In swarms, if individuals know each other at all, it may be just barely, via weak links. Weak links are the cues people can pick up from people who know the people they have to work with. They are indirect indicators and rely, in part, on the confidence others have in their knowledge of people. Navigating ones own personal, professional and social networks helps people develop and exploit both strong and weak links and that, in turn, will be crucial to surviving and exploiting swarms for business benefit. We can nurture organizations through weak links. We had a an interesting discussion about Andreesson Horowitz, a Silicon Valley based VC firm that embraces this basic. They seek to support and develop the companies with an emphasis on building extended networks. In terms of meeting the talent needs, they view themselves as a talent agency (Think of Hollywoods CAA) â€" providing research concerning potential candidates for the start-ups they represent. Ultimately, they understand that when their portfolio of companies flourish, so do stakeholders. How have your weak links pushed you forward? How do you nurture this part of your network?
